About B.Optom (Bachelor of Optometry)
Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom) is a 4-year undergraduate allied healthcare programme that focuses on the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of vision-related disorders and eye diseases. The programme generally consists of 3 years of academic study followed by a 1-year compulsory clinical internship. Optometrists are primary eye care professionals trained to perform comprehensive eye examinations, prescribe spectacles and contact lenses, detect eye diseases, provide vision therapy, and assist ophthalmologists in advanced eye care procedures. The B.Optom curriculum combines medical sciences, optics, vision science, ophthalmology, and clinical training. Students gain practical experience in eye hospitals, vision care centres, optical clinics, and healthcare institutions through laboratory sessions, hospital postings, and internships. With the increasing prevalence of vision disorders, digital eye strain, diabetes-related eye diseases, and the growing demand for quality eye care services, optometry has become one of the fastest-growing allied healthcare professions in India and abroad. Graduates have excellent career opportunities in hospitals, eye care chains, optical companies, research organisations, and private practice.
